I'm so excited about my garden!!

On Saturday we planted our garden! This year I want an organic garden, that means no miracle grow and definitely no weed killer. I can't wait to eat home grown salad, I also want to can some salsa, spaghetti sauce and green beans. We planted: tomatoes, cauliflower, green beans, carrots, green and red bell peppers, potatoes, celery, red onions, spanish onions and lettuce. In my small herb garden I have basil and chives. I love to eat tomato wedges with some salt, drops of olive oil and chives!! Soooo yummy!
For over a year The Casa Hunt had been recycling the basics: glass, plastic, cardboard and aluminum . I have to say how amazed I am about the shrinking of our garbage. We now take our trash can out in the road every other week and is not even filled halfway! I feel pretty good about that! In our attempts to be a little bit greener instead of buying bottled water we got a water purifying pitcher and bought some nice reusable plastic bottles to take water with us. We also bring our reusable bags to the store. I admitted the last time I went to Walmart I completely forgot about them. I got home and started putting everything away, and realized I had plastic bags. Ecological remorse is the worst feeling!!
I have wanted a compost tumbler for a long time, now that we are going organic in our garden it's seemed like the perfect time to get one. Have you seen how expensive they are?!! [click] Fortunately I found these instructions [click] and Handy . . . I mean Randy says yes to all my crazy requests.

Randy always saves the day. On Saturday he fixed the air compressor, fixed the lawn mower, mowed the lawn, tilled the garden, helped me plant, built tunnel cages for some plants, built the compost tumbler and at the end of the day when I was laying on the sofa with a headache and the flu ( not the Miss Piggy kind) he brought me a hot tea!! What a great husband I have!!!

Plantamos nuestra Huerta el sábado pasado!! Este año quiero tener todo orgánico, es decir no fertilizantes y no líquidos para matar maleza. Estoy ansiosa de comer ensaladas y verduritas de mi huerta!! Ahh, estoy tan campestre!! También quiero hacer conservas de salsa de tomate, salsa mexicana para nachos y porotos verdes!! Este año decidimos plantar más variedad y menos cantidad. Plantamos: tomates, porotos verdes, zanahoria, pimentón, morrones, coliflor, apio, cebolla, cebolla morada (es súper rica en ensaladas) y lechugas!! Y en mi jardín de hierbas tengo ciboulette y albahaca. Me estoy imaginando una ensaladita de tomate caseros con ciboulette picado finito, se me hace agua la boca!!

Hace más de un año, en la Casa Hunt hemos estado reciclando, empezamos por lo básico: plástico, cartón, vidrio y aluminio. Debo decir que es impresionante la cantidad de desechos q se pueden reciclar y de lo que poco que se va en la basura. Cuando viene la basura, nuestro tacho ni siquiera está lleno a la mitad. Te crece un sentimiento super noble cuando uno recicla, como que crece tu amor por la naturaleza. En nuestros atentos de tener más conciencia ecológica, decidimos comprar bolsas de genero reusable para ir al supermercado (muy de moda están por estos lados) Debo reconocer que la última vez que fui al súper, me olvide por completo y cuando llegue a la casa y guardo todas las cosas, ahí recién me di cuenta que tenía bolsas plásticas en mis manos!! Me dio un remordimiento, estoy matando al planeta!!!

Hace un montón de tiempo he querido comprarme un tambor compostero, y ahora que vamos a tener nuestro jardín orgánico es la ocasión ideal para tener fertilizante natural!! Resulta que aquí son super caros!![click]... Encontré en internet una versión, "hágalo usted mismo" así que Randy como me dice que Si a todas mis locuras se animó con el proyecto. Mi gorilon es tan talentoso, siempre está trabajando en proyectos en la casa. El día sábado andaba con la pila Duracell puesta, nadie lo paraba. Arreglo el compresor de aire, arreglo la cortadora de pasto, corto el pasto, preparo la tierra para plantar, me ayudo a plantar, construyo unos túneles de malla para proteger las platas que las ardillas se comen, construyo el tambor compostero y al final del día cuando estaba acostada en el sillón con un dolor de cabeza y resfriada (resfrió normal, nada que ver con la Influencia de Miss Piggy) me trajo un tecito de hierbas!! Tengo un esposo tan buenito!!

Como este año vamos orgánicos, compramos de este género para jardines, se usa para prevenir maleza. Así q solo hicimos los hoyitos donde las plantas iban a ir. Ojala nos funcione y no nos crezca tanta maleza.

Since this year we are not using weed killer, we laid down some weed barrier fabric and made holes for the plants. I hope it works! The row in the middle are the green beans. It was so windy on Saturday, that's why there are so many bricks!!

Hice unos hoyos en la base del barril para que el jugo de las cascaras, pasto y todo lo orgánico q tiremos pueda drenar. Se pone un recipiente abajo para guardar estos "jugos", es medio asqueroso pero eso es el principal fertilizante y las plantas lo encuentran muy apetitoso!!

I added some holes in the button of the barrel to retrieve the juice from the organic stuff. That would be our fertilizer, very gross but the plants find it very yummy!!
